It’s the Safe Spaces Episode 59! That’s almost 60… but not quite. The theme running through this episode is one that’s near and dear to our hearts: civil discussion. Is such a thing even possible in an era of politically incorrect snafus, hyper-sensitive tweeting and – of course – trumped up outrage? We’d like to think so, but we’ve been wrong, time and time again. What makes you think this time would be any different?

Where else to start but one of our favorite shows in the history of television: The View! It’s the gift that never stops giving…and boy, did it give this week. Controversial host and author Judge Jeanine Pirro was the guest on last week’s most talked-about program airing during the stupefying hours of daytime TV. The Judge may have been on to promote her new book with the unsubtle title Liars, Leakers, and Liberals: The Case Against the Anti-Trump Conspiracy, but the real subject was one familiar to anyone who’s been paying attention: TDS, aka Trump Derangement Syndrome.

Clearly, the women of The View suffer from this intellectually debilitating ailment, as do most in Hollywood, though it appears that the unusually malevolent Judge Jeanine may not be the right person to diagnose them. What followed was yet another television treat for those who love their daytime watching rough and tough, with just a hint of spicy outrage. What can we say – we love The View!

Speaking of derangement, popular director James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) was unceremoniously tossed from Disney’s Magic Kingdom (read: publicly fired) after ancient tweets resurfaced that didn’t sit well with the top brass behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe he helped create. Yes, many of the tweets were laced with pedophilic and other disgusting references, but it would take a special blend of absolute stupid to think Gunn was being serious when posting them.

Sadly, Gunn accepted Disney’s decision with the usual apologetic, disingenuous legalese that nobody believes – practically a rite of passage in today’s #MeToo environment. Few on the Left are coming to his defense – though several on the Right have been vocal about their displeasure at the Mouse House firing him. Whether it’s abortion, the death penalty, taxes and union dues, in a world where anything can – and often does – happen, only the power of faux outrage and pedo tweets seem to be enough to make ideological opposites consider the other side of the argument.

The episode closes out on an unexpectedly civil look at the rising career of politician, educator, community organizer, political activist, superwoman and Democratic nominee for New York’s 14th congressional district: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Lauded as “the future of the Democratic Party”, she’s already a member of another one – the Democratic Socialist Party, and isn’t shy about it. She was also the guest on a recent episode of the reactivated PBS program Firing Line where she and host Margaret Hoover talked two subjects you’d think an activist with a degree in economics would pass with flying colors: economics and the ongoing Israeli/Palestinian conflict.

You’ve probably heard that Ms. Ocasio-Cortez didn’t exactly fare well – a description that’s more than generous. However, our hosts examine both the questions – and her answers – in ways that go outside the standard Left/Right dynamic. Hey – that sounds an awful lot like a civil discussion! Maybe there’s hope for us all just yet.
